IRONY

Irony is a situation that takes a turn of events different from what is expected. Assuming someone that came out of jail for stealing, and something in house goes missing, would think it was him but it turned out to be your closest friend. That's Ironic because would not suspect closest friends that trust to rob from but were assuming it was your friend who came out of jail that stole from. When report cards were due I knew my mom expected me to fail but instead I passed and my sister who most of the time passes actually failed, that to me is ironic.

"Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is a short story discussing a mans depicted perfect life. Richard Cory was a very classy and well mannered man, he was handsome and dressed very well. The people he was around envied him because he had everything people want materially, and assumed he was the happiest person. He carried himself in a king like manner which led to people treating him and thinking he was a king. He lived a lavish lifestyle and did not have to worry about expenses. Richard Cory went home one day and shot a bullet into his head. Every body wanted to be like Richard Cory because they thought he had it all and lived perfectly. They were shocked he committed suicide because they perceived him to have the best life. Irony took place because everyone wanted to be like him, because they envied him, but they missed something in between that material things does not equal a happy life. He took his own life because of an unexplainable sadness that people did not seem to understand.

"Lamb to the Slaughter" by ROALD DAHL is a very ironic short story. Mary Maloney killed her husband with the frozen lamb she was going to use to cook dinner. What he had told her to provoke that action can only be assumed, but by the looks of things he told her he cheated or that he was getting divorced. She acted as if he never said anything and as he said he was going out, she struck him with the frozen lamb. She put the lamb in the oven and heated it,she must have been crazy considering the fact that she went to the grocery store to pick up items to continue to cook for him. When Mary returned home and found his body laid out on the floor dead, she went into shock and realized she missed him. Mary called the police, some of whom she knew. They came to investigate and asked Mary questions. The cops were bewildered and could not find any evidence or murder weapon. Mary was co-operative and did not seem suspicious of anything. Her alibi was very good and precise, she engaged in a conversation with the store clerk. The detective searched for hours and could not find a thing, after appearing thirsty and hungry Mary offered them drinks and the lamb that was being overcooked. They denied but Mary insisted they eat it, they did not want seem like free loaders but they ate the lamb. The detectives felt like they were no help, lacking to find any evidence or possible suspects. One of the detectives said that they feel like the evidence or murder weapon is around the house somewhere, "right under our noses" said the detective a very ironic and witty quote by the detective. The lamb was the only evidence and they ate it it literally was under their noses.

"The House That Slaves Built" by Gardiner Harris is an article discussing the historical events that took place in The White House that involved African-Americans. The White House was built by free and slaved blacks for the presidents residence. Most of the staff that worked in the white house was black but did not attend presidential events unless it was to serve. In the 19th century the most prominent black guest was Frederick Douglas, he attended three times while Abraham Lincoln was president. Black people as guests to The White House in the start of the 19th century was considered a shame. It is ironic today because we currently have a Black President also known as barack obama who resides in the white. House slaves built the white house for the White presidents and today that is the home of a Black President.

This picture represents irony because on halloween people dress up as an animal, fictional or realistic characters, the picture shows an animal as a human. Irony has much to do with everyday life we all go through. At some point of our lives we have or will come across an ironic situation. "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is a great example because he was the man everyone wanted to be like, but they never expected him to commit suicide because he lived a lifestyle people wished for, not realizing a lavish lifestyle does not promise a happy life. The short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" by ROALD DAHL is also a good example because it was outstanding how ironic it was that the detectives ate the evidence and said that it feels like its right under their noses.
